Overview

Updating the Portfolio to Make a Bigger Impact

As a UI/UX Designer, updating my portfolio website after a year of industry experience was a critical task. Beyond showcasing my latest projects, I aimed to present myself, my skills, and my design evolution more effectively. The goal was to create a portfolio that not only informs but also engages potential recruiters and clients, making a lasting impression.

The Challenge

Most IT recruiters and hiring managers have limited time to review portfolios. Long, text-heavy case studies can be overwhelming, so it was essential to design a concise, visually appealing, and easy-to-navigate portfolio. The challenge was to:

  • Structure the content effectively to highlight my skills, thought process, and personality.

  • Ensure the interface reflects my creativity and expertise.

  • Keep the experience intuitive, engaging, and memorable.

The Solution

Step 1: Evaluating the Previous Portfolio

To understand what needed improvement, I:
✅ Analyzed my existing website.
✅ Gathered feedback from friends and IT recruiters.
✅ Researched industry expectations for UI/UX portfolios.

Key Issues Identified:
  • Outdated content that did not reflect my latest projects.

  • Minimalist design that lacked a personal touch and creativity.

  • Text-heavy case studies that needed to be more concise and structured.

  • Lack of hierarchy, making key information harder to find.

Step 2: Understanding the Target Audience

To make the portfolio relevant and impactful, I researched what recruiters and clients look for in a UI/UX designer’s portfolio:

What it should showcase:

  • Thought process & approach

  • Problem-solving skills & empathy

  • Soft skills & communication

  • Visual design capabilities

What it should be:

  • Easy to navigate

  • Well-structured & scannable

  • Visually engaging & informative

Step 3: Information Architecture & Content Strategy

With these insights, I structured the portfolio to be:
Visually creative yet simple & intuitive – to showcase personality without overwhelming the user.
Concise & structured – clear project summaries with well-defined sections.
Memorable & brand-focused – creating a unique visual identity for recognition.
Fully responsive – optimized for different devices.

I designed an information architecture that balances storytelling with usability.

Results & Impact

✅ A visually appealing portfolio that better reflects my skills and creativity.
✅ A clearer structure that makes it easy for recruiters to scan.
✅ A stronger personal brand that enhances recognition.

Conclusion

By refining my portfolio with a structured information architecture, engaging visuals, and a strong personal brand, I created a high-impact, user-friendly website that effectively showcases my expertise.

Next Steps: Continuous iteration based on user feedback and evolving design trends.
